Chapter 19: Two Women

"Why are you telling me?" I said.

"Because I want to meet you. Tomorrow. Somewhere nobody from the club would be caught dead."

"There's a diner on Western Avenue by the Orange Line," I said. "Seven a.m."

"Seven a.m. is an atrocity."

"Then don't come."

She came.

I got there at ten to seven and took the back booth.

Hutch waited in the truck in the parking lot with the engine running and his eyes on the door.

He'd wanted to come in.

I'd said this one was mine.

Cate walked in at seven exactly in a black coat with the collar turned up and big sunglasses.

She still had the red lipstick on.

I'd never once seen her without it.

She slid into the booth across from me and didn't take off the sunglasses.

The waitress poured her coffee without asking.

Cate looked at the mug.

"Well," she said. "Here we are. Two women he's finished with."

"I finished with him," I said. "At a podium. You were there."

She took off the sunglasses.

Her eyes were red around the rims, and she'd put on mascara anyway.

"Let's not pretend we're friends," she said.

"I wasn't going to."

"I never liked you. Not for a minute. Four years of you at the club in your nice little dresses, writing his speeches, remembering everybody's dead mother. The help in a better dress."

"You came all the way to Western Avenue to tell me that?"

"I came because it's true and I want it said before I do this."

She picked up her coffee and put it down without drinking.

"And I'm not sorry about the painting," she said. "I'd do it again. It was my idea, you know. Not his. I saw that scar at the pool and I knew exactly what it was worth to him."

"I know. I heard you laugh about it."
