Chapter 20: The Wall

Beck felt the first guard's hand close on his jersey and did not turn around.

Then the hand was gone.

A wall of Wolves jerseys had come down the ice, shoulder to shoulder, and every man in the wall was bigger than the guard.

The youngest rookie stood on Beck's left, with his stick across his chest.

"Back up, sir," the rookie said.

"Captain, I'm ordering you," the guard said.

"He's not your captain."

"I work for the owner."

"So do we," the rookie said. "We just stopped."

Beck looked down the line.

Ten other men had signed the gag in August.

Eight of them stood in the wall.

Two defensemen stayed at the back with their gloves off, not meeting his eyes.

Then one of them skated forward and took his place at the end of the wall.

Then the other.

All ten.

None of them had agreed to stand with him in advance.

Beck felt something that was not triumph, and not quite relief.

"Thanks," he said, low.

"Shut up, Cap," said the man on his right. "You've got a mic."

He lifted it.

"My name is Beck Rylander," he said. "I've been captain of this team for six years. I'm done. Whatever happens to me, the paper is real."

The crowd had stopped being a crowd.

It was a single sound.

In the stands, four rows behind the bench, he found her again.

She was on her feet with both hands over her mouth, and Susanna was lifting her bodily onto a seat.

Donald had taken the microphone from a technician at the boards.

"This man is under a penalty contract," he said, shaking. "Remove him. Remove every one of them. They are breaching their agreements, and the Dunning Group will pursue..."

His phone rang.

He ignored it.

It rang again.

His own head of security, a heavy man in a dark overcoat, walked across the ice, straight to Donald, and held out his phone.
