Chapter 9: Nine Million

Beck Rylander got to the practice rink at seven the next morning, three hours early, and found the owner's car already in the lot.

He had not slept.

He had spent the night sitting in his own kitchen, listening to a woman breathe through a closed door.

He walked into Donald Dunning's office at the end of the hall and shut the door behind him.

Donald sat behind the desk with a cup of coffee and a leather folder.

It was the same kind Amber carried.

"Sit, Captain."

"I'll stand."

"As you like." Donald turned the folder around and pushed it across the desk. "Your extension. Two more years. Nine million a season."

Beck did not look at it.

"That's a lot of money for a man who was fined and benched last spring."

"Which you earned. You spread a rumor about a teammate's wife."

"I told her the truth."

"You told her nothing," Donald said. "She repeated a drunken whisper to her husband, and he made a very sensible public statement about jealous rivals."

Beck remembered March.

The charity skate. The cold rink. Lena Sadler in a borrowed Wolves scarf, laughing at something a kid had said.

He had walked up to her at the boards, with Stanton twenty yards away, and said it plainly.

Ask your husband who he's calling from the parking lot. Ask him whose name is on his phone as Dee.

Dee was Amber. He had seen her number light up Stanton's screen in the locker room.

She had gone white, and then she had gone angry.

"I'm telling him you said that," she had told him. "Because I won't have people lying about him."
