Chapter 18: The Dock
Ivy listened to my recording twice at her kitchen table.
"Friday," she said.
Then she told us to get out of that house for a night and sleep somewhere that had no one in it.
Patrick drove me to the river.
The Habersham river house at Isle of Hope stood shut for the winter, a white clapboard place on stilts, with its shutters closed.
He had the key on his ring.
We walked down through the dead grass in the dark.
The dock ran out a hundred feet over black water, grey planks with a rail down one side.
Cold came off the river and went through my coat.
"This is it," Patrick said. "This is where my mother says she went in."
We stopped at the end.
I put my hands on the rail and looked down at the tide moving against the pilings.
It was a very ordinary place.
A woman could have stood here and drawn herons, if she had liked birds.
"She never stood here," I said.
"No," he said.
"She walked out of that house through the kitchens with a blue bag, and Beatrix put a scarf on the pilings."
