Chapter 7: Her Bed

Edie's POV

"I don't know where the bag is," Patrick said in the fogged-up truck. "But I'm going to find out."

I believed him, and I said nothing else about it all day.

I said nothing at breakfast either, where Beatrix watched my wrists for the perfume and my neck for the pearls.

I had held something back since the hospital, and by midnight I knew I could not hold it any longer.

I did not go to the master bedroom.

I went down to the study in Ivy's nightgown with my feet bare and woke him on the leather sofa by sitting on his legs.

"Edie."

"I need to say a thing."

He sat up slowly.

A bar of light from the garden fell across his chest, and I had to look at the wall for a second.

"The corridor," I said. "At the hospital, the night we married."

He didn't move.

"I was at the vending machine at the end of the hall. I had two quarters in my hand."

He said my name.

"Your mother said it was your father's last wish. And you said, 'Pick whoever you want. I'll say the words.'"

It sounded smaller out loud.

It had not felt small standing there with the quarters cutting into my palm.

"I was a name on a form," I said. "You didn't turn around. You didn't even look to see who I was. I've been waiting a week to tell you that I heard it, and that I signed anyway."
