Chapter 9: The Back Seat

"Mrs. Habersham," I said, as the car pulled away from the curb. "Say it again."

Patrick turned in the seat.

"Edie."

"No. The one you gave a hundred and ten hats. Say it to me, in here, where I can hear it."

"I wanted the room off her chair," he said.

"You wanted the room to stay calm. I stood up in front of every woman in Savannah and told them I was Edie, and you sat down and called me what your mother calls me."

"That isn't fair," he said.

"It's the rule. I made one rule about that name, and you broke it in a ballroom."

His jaw set.

"Let me ask you something, then," he said. "Since we're being honest in the back of a car."

"Ask."

"Did you name a price?"

I stared at him.

"My mother told me the night before the wedding," he said, low. "She said you came to my father's bedside before the vows and named your figure. That you wouldn't say the words until she met it."

The car turned onto Abercorn.

I watched the oaks go past with the light moving in them.

"Two hundred thousand and change," he said. "She told me you asked for it, and I told myself it didn't matter, because I'd have paid anything to give my father one good hour."

"And you believed her."

"I believed my mother," he said.

"Of course you did."

He leaned forward. "Edie, I've been married to the idea of you being bought for ten days. I'd like to know if it was true."
