Chapter 15: Diane Arrives

Diane came into the lodge with her purse over her arm and a pie in a carrier.

She kissed Shanna on the cheek first.

Shanna let her, and I saw the muscle in her jaw jump, and then Shanna smiled, bright and sweet.

"Diane! You didn't say you were coming."

"I couldn't stay away from my girl. How is the little one?"

"Fine," Shanna said. "Hungry."

"Good. Eat."

Waylon stood behind them with his hands in his pockets, white around the mouth.

Diane turned her head and found me at the desk.

She looked at me for a long moment. She did not look surprised at all.

"And this must be the cousin," she said.

"Jo," I said.

"Jo." She smiled. "Samantha's cousin. What a sad, sweet coincidence. Waylon told me on the phone. I'm Diane, Waylon's mother."

"I know who you are."

"Do you?" She put the pie down on my counter, very gently. "Then you know I only want what's best for this family."

"I'll bear that in mind."

Cal had come in through the back. Diane turned to him with both hands out.

"Mr. Dunning. A word, in private? A small matter about staffing."

We ended up in the office, because Diane did not wait to be asked.

Cal shut the door. I stood beside the filing cabinet. Diane sat in the one good chair with her purse on her knees.

"I'll be brief," she said. "That young woman is upsetting my son's fiancée."

"Is she," Cal said.

"Shanna is delicate right now. She is expecting. Seeing a stranger who looks exactly like Waylon's late wife is a cruelty, and I don't think you meant it, but you can fix it today."
