Chapter 17: The Garage

The depot garage was two floors down from the safety office, and I took the stairs.

Her blue sedan stood in its numbered space with the driver's door open.

Her coffee cup lay on its side beside the front tire, and the lid had rolled under the car.

Her phone was gone.

A security guard sat against the pillar with one hand pressed over his ear and blood between his fingers.

"Three of them," he said. "Black hoods. They had a van. Mr. Preston was in the front seat, and he said it was a family matter."

"Which way?"

"Out the east gate." He tried to stand and sat down again. "Mr. Brannigan, I'm sorry. I couldn't."

"You did fine. Press harder."

I turned around and found the old driver from bay six behind me, with six more drivers at his back.

They had come down the stairs after me without a word.

"We heard it on the radio," the old driver said. "The guard called it in. What do you need?"

"A man who knows the Fulton yard."

"Everyone here has worked it." He held up a ring of keys. "Gate code is four-four-one-nine. The loading dock faces the street. The shift starts at seven, and there'll be two hundred of us on the dock."

I took the keys.

"Don't come in," I said. "Not yet. Be on the street at seven."

"We'll be there," he said. "Son."
