Chapter 17: Day 212

Nobody in the ballroom coughed.

Chad took half a step toward the lectern.

The host lifted two fingers, without turning her head, and he stopped.

"Wish fourteen," I said, and took out the second slip. "I wrote that I wanted something in the house that would grow while I got better."

I held up my phone and read from the screen.

"Row fourteen. Lemon tree. Status, done. Credit, G.P. Notes, real credit D.W. Grown from seed in his garage. Do not mention D.W. publicly. He doesn't ask for it."

The partner in the grey suit lifted his head.

"That's a document from my husband's office," I said. "His office manager typed it. It has a column for credit."

"Callie," Chad said, with a little laugh, to the room. "She's very tired."

"Thirty-one," I said.

I took out the third slip.

"The recipe box. Row thirty-one says the lid was repaired by hand, over three weekends, by D.W."

A man at a front table frowned.

"Chad," he said. "Your firm paid a restoration invoice last spring. I signed it."

Somebody laughed, shortly, and then clapped a hand over their mouth.

Chad said nothing at all.

"Who is D.W.?" the host said, into her own microphone.

She asked it.

I looked to the back of the ballroom.

"Dane Vandervoort," I said. "He lives two doors down from the house I was married in. He took my wishes out of my husband's kitchen trash, one every morning, for a thousand days, and he made nine hundred and twelve of them come true."
