Chapter 18: Both Children

Dane's POV

I had carried a lot of things in my life, and none of them had felt as heavy as three hundred people looking at me.

Teddy kicked his heels against my chest.

"Dane," he said. "Why is everybody looking?"

"Because you waved."

"I waved nice."

"You did."

The ballroom was on its feet, loud as a river.

A woman at table four was filming with her phone held in both hands.

On the stage, the host had stopped being a host.

She turned to the nearest camera, with the red light on it, and said in a very clear voice, "We are live, and we are staying live."

The heavy man in the grey suit climbed onto the stage.

He took the microphone from the lectern.

"Chad," he said. "Put that child down and tell this room whose she is."

Chad set the girl on her feet.

His hands were open at his sides, and they weren't steady.

"This isn't what it."

"Don't." The partner's voice was flat. "MacTiernan Group has a morals clause. I've read it to you twice. I'll call the board tonight, and you'll clear your desk before it opens on Monday."

Somebody applauded.

Then somebody else did, and it spread across the tables in an ugly, hungry way, and Chad's face did the thing I had seen it do through a door crack, the night he came to my house.

It went completely flat.

He looked for the woman he trusted.

Tierney stood by the folding table with both hands over her mouth.

He looked at the cameras.

Then his eyes found me, at the back, with his son on my shoulders.

I knew what he was going to do about one second before he did it.

He stepped off the stage and came down the middle aisle, fast, pushing past a waiter.
