Chapter 19: Signed
Callie's POV
On Monday morning the same man in the pressed suit sat at Dane's kitchen table, and he did not take off his coat.
He had a leather folder, and he opened it.
"My client has instructed me to resolve everything today," he said.
"Your client has been on the news since Saturday," I said.
"He has." He didn't smile. "As of seven this morning, Mr. MacTiernan is no longer a partner at MacTiernan Group Realty. The county board has withdrawn his nomination and asked for the plaque back."
Dane stood in the doorway with his arms crossed.
Teddy sat at the end of the table eating toast, with jam up to both elbows.
"What does he want?" I said.
"He wants to sign." The lawyer turned a page toward me. "Sole custody of Teddy to you. No visitation unless you grant it. The house is sold and the money is yours, less the debts."
He slid the pen across.
I read all nine pages.
It took me forty minutes, and no one hurried me, not even the man with the folder.
Dane poured me coffee with the right amount of cream, and I noticed, and I let myself.
My hand was steady on the last page.
I wrote Callie Linden on the line, with the L I had loved as a girl, and the date.
The lawyer collected the pages, tapped them even, and stood.
"He is waiting outside," he said at the door, not looking at me. "He asked if you would see him. You don't have to."
He left.
Through the front window, I saw Chad's silver sedan idling at the curb with a single suitcase in the back seat.
