Chapter 13: Doors That Lock From Outside

The house stood behind iron gates in Bridgeport, and the gates opened before Cesare touched the horn.

Two men took our phones at the front door.

They took Cesare's gun too, and he handed it over butt first without a word.

"Your husband carries a lot of steel," one of them said to me.

"My husband is a careful man," I said.

Cesare did not look at me.

I had told him in the car, with the engine off and the dog asleep in my lap.

I had said, "If he asks, you are my husband. Say nothing else."

He had said, "Renata," and then, after a long moment, "Fine."

The dining room was long and warm, with a fire going and four places laid at one end.

Nico sat at the far side of the table in a clean shirt.

He had shaved, and he would not meet my eyes.

The host rose from the head of the table.

He was past fifty, silver at the temples, with a soft voice and a tailor's idea of a smile.

"Miss Orsini," he said. "You came."

"You asked nicely."

"I did." He gestured at the chair. "And this is the husband."

"This is Cesare."

"Of the Taylor Street Sabatinis." He shook Cesare's hand and held it a beat too long. "Your father spoke of you."

"He spoke of everyone," Cesare said.

The host laughed and sat.

Behind me, a key turned in the lock.

I did not turn around.

"Old houses," the host said. "The doors lock from outside. A habit."

A man in a gray suit put a folder at my elbow and went to stand by the wall.

"Let me tell you what I was sold," the host said. "Forty million for the Orsini docks. Twenty paid already, to Nico, as a deposit. The rest a week after the wedding, when the bride signs the transfer as a gift to her husband."
