Chapter 15: Forgery

Nobody at the table said anything for a long moment.

Alberto held out his hand.

I slid the file down the table, and he took it and opened it to the lab page.

He read with his glasses pushed low on his nose, and he moved his lips on the hard words.

Then he read the doctor's note aloud, in a flat voice, all the way to the last line.

"Patient informed. Husband informed. Husband states he will speak to the family attorney."

He took off his glasses.

"Tommaso," he said. "You were told."

"I thought it was a mistake," Tommaso said. "Vittoria said the lab got it wrong. She said Elisa wanted us to believe it."

"She said."

"Papa."

"You are thirty-one years old, and a woman said, and you did not read."

Tommaso's face went gray.

Vittoria put down her pen.

"Don Galli, may I speak?"

"You have spoken."

"I'd like to speak once more, because I owe this Family the truth." Her hands lay folded on the folder. "I have been afraid to say it. I didn't want to hurt Elisa on the day she buried her mother."

"Say it," Alberto said.

"That record isn't real."

A murmur ran down the table.

"I don't mean the hospital made it up. I mean the page in your hand was altered." She turned to me, and her eyes were wet and kind. "Elisa, I'm so sorry. Somebody used you. Somebody who needed a Galli wife to stand up at this table and call my work a crime."

"Who?" a capo asked.

"The man whose house she has been sleeping in."

The murmur became a roar.
