My Mafia Husband Called Me Unfaithful Then I Married His Enemy novel · Chapter 9 of 24

Chapter 9: Terms

I called the number again that night.

"I'll send the car," he said.

"I'll drive myself. Give me the address."

He gave it to me, and he didn't argue.

The Montanari house stood on a bluff above the lake, behind a stone wall with one guard at the gate.

The guard looked at my license, then at the hatchback, and opened the gate without a word.

Massimo met me at the front door in shirtsleeves.

Without the coat he looked younger, and more tired.

"Come in," he said. "You haven't eaten since the funeral."

"How do you know that?"

"Your face."

The kitchen was big and plain, with a long wooden table and one lamp.

He put a bowl of pasta in front of me.

"Did you make this?"

"I tried." He sat across from me. "It's worse than it looks."

It was worse than it looked.

I ate every bite.

When I put down my fork, I set the hospital file on the table.

"A doctor wrote down that I was drugged," I said. "She told my husband. And a release with my forged signature sent a short summary to Vittoria Neri."

He opened the file and read the lab page, and a muscle moved in his jaw.

"I thought it might be there," he said.

"You thought."

"I couldn't get a copy. I'm not a patient." He pushed a thick folder across to me. "This is mine."

Inside were three hotel confirmations.

The Marlowe, room 412.
