Chapter 19: Engaged

"She's not gone back," I said. "She's been taken back."

"She dialed the number herself," the marshal said. "I've got the motel log."

I hung up on her.

I sat on the edge of the bed with the sheet around me and the phone in my lap.

Sandro sat up behind me, slowly, one arm around his ribs.

He didn't say anything.

He put his forehead against my bare shoulder and waited.

"I gave her the bed," I said. "I gave her my coffee. I went in the water and she watched me do it."

"I know."

"She said nobody in that house would go in the water for anybody. And then she walked out at five in the morning and got in his car."

"Annie."

"Don't tell me she's scared. I know she's scared. I was scared for ten years and I still never got in his car."

"You did," he said quietly. "You got in it at nineteen. For her."

I didn't have anything to say to that.

The assistant U.S. attorney called that afternoon.

He was angrier than I'd ever heard him.

"You understand what he's doing," he said. "If he marries her, I can't make her testify against him. Spousal privilege. Everything she saw in that garage goes in a drawer forever."

"That's why he didn't fight my divorce."

"That's why he's in a hurry." He breathed out. "He's not marrying your sister, Ms. Sorrentino. He's marrying a witness."

The week before Christmas, I opened the yard's first bank account in my own name and Sandro's.

I made a page for the yard on the internet with a photo of the sloop and a phone number.

Eleven boats booked spring work off it in five days.

The old man said he didn't trust computers.

Then he asked me to show him how to look at the page on his phone, and he looked at it every morning after that.
