Chapter 26: The Altar

Gia slept in my bed at the motel by the airport, on her side, with a pillow under her stomach.

I didn't sleep.

Sandro sat up with me in the plastic chair by the window, and at three he fell asleep with his head against the curtain.

At seven the marshal brought the dress over in a garment bag. A seamstress from the bureau had sewn the torn seam shut in the night.

There was nothing in it now.

Gia stood in front of the motel mirror in her slip, with her hair down to the middle of her back.

"I can't do it myself," she said. "My arms don't go up that far anymore."

So I did it.

I brushed it out, the way I used to on Saturday nights before her First Communion, and pinned it up off her neck.

My fingers remembered every bit of it.

She watched me in the mirror the whole time.

"Annalisa," she said. "Pop's not here."

"I know."

"Somebody's supposed to walk me in."

I put the last pin in.

"I'll walk you in," I said.

Holy Ghost was full by a quarter to eleven.

White roses on every pew. White roses on the altar rail. The smell of them was so thick.

Two hundred people.

Every capo in the family, with his wife, in the pews on the groom's side. The one who'd gone to Florida had flown back for it. He sat on the aisle with his tan and his sunglasses in his breast pocket.

Behind them sat half of Providence. A city councilman. Two judges. The man who owned the bakery on Atwells and the woman who ran the hospital ball.

The consigliere sat alone at the end of the fourth row.

The bride's side was almost empty.

I knew why. Our family was the bride and me.

At the back of the church, under the choir loft, there were six men in dark suits I had never seen at any Vescari christening.
