My Mafia Husband Faked Amnesia, So I Took His Empire novel · Chapter 4 of 24

Chapter 4: The Doctor in the Garage

We walked out of the church hall into a gray morning, and my husband held my arm the whole way up the basement stairs.

He had not asked to. I had not stopped him.

At the top he let go, and I stepped off the curb in my heels.

My ankle turned.

His hand caught my elbow before I knew I was falling, and then it slid down to my waist and stayed there.

Neither of us moved.

His thumb shifted against my ribs, once, a small restless stroke.

I did not think it meant anything. A man who had been holding a lie for two days would be tense everywhere.

"You're shaking," he said.

"It's cold."

"It's sixty degrees."

I stepped out of his hand. "I turned my ankle, Mr. Landolfi."

"Teo," he said. "If we're going to keep meeting."

I did not answer that.

"Why did you pay them?" he said. "The widows. You don't know me. You have no reason to help me look good."

"I wasn't helping you," I said. "I was helping them."

He looked at me for a long moment, and the scarred eyebrow was still.

"Fair enough," he said, and went down the block to where Benny's car idled with Sheridan in the back seat.

I watched him go.

He looked back once, and I looked away first.

My phone buzzed. It was Fausto.

*The doctor is parked in the garage under his own clinic. He has been there since eight. I think he is hiding.*

I took a cab.

The garage under the clinic smelled of oil and wet concrete. I found the doctor's silver sedan on the second level, and the doctor behind the wheel with the engine off.
