Chapter 9: Ask Your Husband

Nobody ate dessert.

The captains left in twos and threes, avoiding Benny's eye.

I stood in the front hall with my coat over my arm, waiting for the housekeeper to bring my bag.

Teo came out of the dining room and stopped in front of me.

"Mrs. Landolfi," he said, loud enough for the hall to hear. "You'll sleep in the master suite tonight."

Behind him, Sheridan stopped on the stairs.

"Teo..."

"Miss Wellington, a car will take you home."

"But I thought I'd stay and..."

"A car will take you home," he said again, quietly.

She looked at him. He did not look back.

Her face crumpled, and tears ran down her cheeks.

Nobody in the hall was watching them anymore.

She took her coat from the housekeeper's arm and walked out without a word.

Teo turned back to me.

"I'll take the study," he said. "You have the bed."

"That's very kind."

"It's your room," he said, and then stopped. "I mean, it looks like yours."

"It is," I said.

Upstairs, I stood in the doorway of the master suite.

My hairbrush was back on the dresser.

Somebody had hung my robe on the hook.

I sat on the edge of the bed and pushed up my sleeve.

There was a ring of purple marks around my wrist, four small ovals and a larger one.

He had held me down by the wrist on his desk.

"Mrs. Landolfi."

Teo stood in the doorway. He had followed me up. He had not knocked.
