Chapter 21: The Trial of Rocco Lucarelli

Rocco's car sat at the gate until dawn with its lights off, and then he got out with his hands empty.

He told the guards he had come to answer the Commission, and they patted him down and let him in.

The Commission sat at noon in the oldest Don's long hall, under a painting of his grandfather.

Five chairs stood in a row.

Four held men.

The fifth was empty, and Rocco stood in front of it with his hands behind his back, in a black suit and his gold watch.

He had searched the room with his eyes when he walked in.

I noticed it, and I did not understand it yet.

Behind the chairs sat three hundred people on folding benches, capos and soldiers and wives.

The pins of the men who had walked out of the club glinted on their lapels, and they sat on my side of the aisle.

My daughter was asleep in a room above our heads, with a nurse and the oldest Don's wife.

I had held her for ten minutes that morning.

"This is a Commission trial," the oldest Don said. "Rocco Lucarelli stands accused of breaking the oath he swore at his mother's grave. Mrs. Lucarelli has already spoken. Who speaks next?"

"I do," Fabiola said.

She stood up from the second bench with the night nurse's arm under hers.

She wore a plain grey dress, and her hair was tied back, and she had no jewelry.

She walked down the aisle slowly, and she did not look at Rocco once.

"My name is Fabiola Neri," she said. "A lawyer put this in front of me on the first day."

She laid the contract on the table.

"A year, five hundred thousand, and a plane ticket the morning after. I signed it and I told myself it wasn't real. I wore a dead woman's pearls in that foyer, and I enjoyed it."

"Miss Neri," the second Don said sharply. "Are you saying that Rocco Lucarelli never intended to marry you?"
