Chapter 4: One Pint and a Signature

Stefano went out to the gate alone.

I followed him, and he did not tell me to stay inside.

Rocco had brought thirty men.

They stood along the wall of the Ravello garden with their jackets open, and Stefano's men stood on the other side of the gate with their hands near theirs.

Between the two lines was one iron gate and about six feet of gravel.

Rocco got out of the Mercedes in his Sunday suit.

He looked at Stefano, and he looked at me.

"Ravello," he said. "You're holding my wife."

"She walked in," Stefano said. "She's free to walk out."

"Cosima." Rocco's voice was patient. "Come home."

"No."

"Fabiola is bleeding again."

He said it loud enough for both crews to hear.

"The doctor says she has an hour. The baby has less."

I looked past him at the Mercedes.

Fabiola's face was pressed against the window, bloodless and pale.

When she saw me, she put one hand on her stomach and gave me a small tired smile.

I knew that smile.

It was the same one she had given the foyer on Friday.

"Let her bleed," I said.

Nobody breathed.

"I mean it, Rocco. You held me down on a table. You told a doctor to take all of it. I'll never give you another drop."

"You'll let an unborn child die?"

"You'll let it die," I said. "You brought her to our anniversary dinner and told me to sleep out back. You did that. I didn't."

Rocco opened his mouth.

In the Mercedes, something fell against the glass.

The back door swung open, and Fabiola slid out onto the gravel.

She did not get up again.

The doctor ran to her.

Blood had soaked through the skirt of her dress and was spreading across the stones in a dark circle.
