Rina spread eleven bank statements across her kitchen table on Taylor Street and put a beer on each corner.

"Explain it to me like I'm a bartender," she said.

"You are a bartender."

"Then it'll be quick."

I put my finger on the first line.

"Every month St. Anne's Guild gets fifteen thousand from Leandro's restaurant accounts. Every month it pays out almost all of it to Delfina's mother. The leftover is two hundred and fifty dollars, and that goes to the same place."

"Which is?"

"Lakeview Memorial Chapel. A funeral home on Central Street in Evanston."

Rina looked at the page, and then at me.

"Who pays a funeral home every month?"

"Someone renting a vault."

"For what?"

"For a thing she doesn't want in her mother's house."

I had spent five years of Sundays copying that account and had never once asked.

Rina grabbed her keys and her leather jacket.

"I'm driving," she said. "You drive like you're pricing a mortgage."

"Teo said to wait for his men."

"Teo's men are at the hospital guarding a baby, and I'm sober and I've got a Honda."

We were on Lake Shore Drive when a black SUV slid in two cars behind us.

Rina checked the mirror.

"Friend of yours?"

"Leandro's."

"Of course it is."

She changed lanes without signaling, and the SUV changed with her.
