Cece's POV

The man in the gray suit opened his file and laid a single page on the council table.

"A donor agreement," he said. "Dated last January. Mrs. Montalto Bastiani sold one frozen embryo to my client for a fee, and waived every claim to it."

He pointed at the signature at the bottom.

"That is her hand."

Every head in the room turned to me.

"May I look?" I said.

He passed me the page, and I held it next to the clinic's release, which my lawyer had given me in a folder that morning.

I laid them side by side under the lamp.

"This is the form the Saint Brigid's doctor kept," I said, to the oldest boss. "It says I released three embryos. It's dated January twenty-eighth, and it has my name on it."

"And?"

"I never signed either. Look at the capital C."

The old man from Cicero leaned in and squinted.

"They're the same C," he said slowly.

"They're the same C because one person wrote both. He practiced it. You can see where the line wobbles on the tail."

I turned toward the floor, where Leandro sat against the wall with two guards on either side of him.

"Tell them who signed my name."

Leandro looked up at me.

His collar was torn, and he did not smile.

"Tell them," I said. "You've got nothing left to protect."

"I signed it," Leandro said at last.

He said it to the room, flatly.

"Both of them. The release and the letter. She never saw either."
