Chapter 21: Papou's Last Card

The Post lay on the kitchen table with the front page face up.

Karras Dock Bookkeeper Skimmed Docks for a Decade.

Under it was a photograph of the row house in Queens, taken from the street, and a smaller one of Lena on the courthouse steps in her wedding dress.

Damian read the first paragraph standing up.

Then he set the paper down very carefully and pressed his palms on the table.

"He sent it before the vote," he said. "He knew it would print Saturday. It's all he had left."

Lena's phone lit up beside her coffee.

Phoebe: I'm so sorry. I didn't send them anything. Please believe me.

She turned the phone face down.

"I'm going to Queens," she said.

"The doctor said..."

"My father's going to meet the police on his front steps in front of the whole street. I won't have him do it alone."

Damian looked at her for a moment.

Then he got his coat.

By ten there were two vans and a dozen reporters on the narrow street, and a crowd of neighbors in bathrobes.

Her father stood at the top of the steps in the cedar-smelling suit.

His lawyer, a lean woman Damian had hired at midnight, stood at his shoulder with a folder.

Lena's mother held his arm.

A black car rolled up to the curb.

The door opened, and Stavros Karras stepped out onto the pavement, leaning on his silver cane.

He had shaved.

He wore the grey three-piece suit, and a white carnation in the buttonhole.

The cameras swung round.

"Mr. Karras!" a reporter called. "Mr. Karras, is it true you knew about the bookkeeper?"

"I am heartbroken," Stavros said, and his voice carried. "A man I trusted, a man who ate at my table. I have come only to see the family through a sad day."
