Chapter 10: Nine Phones
The first woman let the recordings run for a full minute before she pressed stop.
Nobody in the kitchen said a word.
I sat down on an upturned flour bin because my knees had quit.
"Play the one from year seven," the woman from year four said to the year-seven woman. "The one about the cake."
"No," I said.
"Daphne."
"I want to hear it."
The year-seven woman tapped her screen.
Bancroft's voice came out, easy and amused, in a room I recognized.
It was my own kitchen, at my own counter, with the smell of my cooking behind it.
"She spent three days on that cake," he said. "You should've seen her face when I told her to give you the first slice. She'd have given you the plate, the fork and her kidney if I'd asked."
A woman laughed on the recording.
It was the year-seven woman.
She looked at me across the room, with her mouth set and her eyes wet.
"I laughed because he was watching me," she said. "I've been sorry for it for three years."
"You gave me a cake the day you left," I said.
"It was the only way I knew how to say it."
I put my face in my hands.
When I looked up, Bea had come around the prep table and was standing beside me with a hand on my shoulder.
"What do you want to do?" she said.
"I want him to hear it."
"He'll hear it in a courtroom."
