Chapter 5: Hazel

We drove down the mountain in the rain with the wipers going flat out.

Lucan drove, and Tobias followed in the second SUV with four guards.

I sat in the front seat this time, because I could not stand being in the back.

"He's bluffing," I said. "He wouldn't hurt her."

"He lost you at a poker table and posted your face for a bet," Lucan said. "I wouldn't call him a man who knows his limits."

I bit down on that.

He was right, and I hated that he was right.

Silver Creek's land ran down the slope in a long green stripe, hall at the top, houses in the middle, and at the very bottom a small white cottage with a crooked chimney.

Smoke came out of it, which was a relief.

Then I saw the cars in the yard.

Three trucks and a black sedan, parked across the front garden where Hazel grew her beans.

"That's the pack's healer's car," I said.

"Whose?"

"Kendra's mother. She's been the healer since before I was born."

Lucan parked behind the sedan.

I was out before the engine stopped.

The cottage door stood open, and two big Silver Creek wolves in raincoats blocked the porch.

They knew me.

I had gone to school with one of them.

"Orla," the first one said. "You can't come in."

"That's my grandmother's house."

"The healer says she's not well. No visitors."

"She's not well," the second one said, and would not look at me.

"Move."

"Orders, Orla. From the Alpha."

I heard the SUV doors open behind me.

Lucan came up the path with his coat undone and the rain running off his hair.

He did not say a word.

He just stood beside me, and both wolves took a step back, then another.

"You're blocking my path," I said. "I'll ask once, and he won't ask at all."
