Chapter 9: The Writ

We reached the cottage before noon.

Hazel insisted on coming.

She sat in the back of the SUV in a hospital blanket with her chin up, and when I tried to tell her to stay, she told me exactly where I could put my opinion.

Lucan kept his eyes on the road and his mouth very straight.

The yard in front of the cottage was full.

Brock stood on the porch step in a clean shirt with a folded paper in his hand.

Behind him were thirty Silver Creek wolves and the pack's eldest, a bent old man who sat on a kitchen chair carried out for him.

I got out and helped Hazel down.

She stood on her own.

The whole yard fell quiet.

"Hazel," Brock said, spreading his hands. "You're up. I'm so glad. We were worried sick."

"You drugged me," she said.

"The healer says you're confused."

"The healer says a lot of things." She leaned on my arm. "Say your piece, boy. I have beans to replant."

He cleared his throat and unfolded the paper.

"By Moon law," he said, loud enough for the back row, "a debt to a pack passes to the holder's kin. Orla Ardmore took thirty thousand dollars from the pack's table yesterday that was not hers."

"I won it," I said.

"She stole it. She now owes the pack that sum, with interest, and the only thing the Ardmores own that's worth that is this cottage and this land." He looked at Hazel. "I'm sorry, Hazel. I have to."

I heard Hazel breathe in.

I looked at the porch where she had sat every evening of my childhood, and my hands curled into fists.

"May I see that?" I said.

Brock hesitated, then held it out.

I took it and read it slowly, front and back.

Then I held it up and read it aloud.
