Chapter 18: Silver Over the Scar

They put me in the Council's cold room behind the great hall, with a silver chain around both wrists and the other end bolted to the wall.

The silver burned a little. Not enough to hurt, only enough to remind me.

Gunnar came at midnight and sat on the one stool with his hands folded.

"I'm sorry it came to this," he said. "You're a good girl, and you've been very brave."

"You're a poisoner."

"I'm an old man who loves his pack." He sighed. "Exile at dawn. The Stone will be quiet this month. Torin will take his Luna and recover, and you'll go home to Oda. It's the kindest ending anyone has."

"He'll never take her."

"He'll take what the law gives him."

He stood, patted my knee, and went out.

I pulled at the chain until my wrists bled and my wolf howled in my ribs.

At one in the morning the door blew in.

It didn't open. It came off its hinges and hit the far wall.

Torin stood in the gap with his shirt torn at the shoulder and his eyes full gold, and Anders behind him with a bolt cutter.

Behind them were twelve wolves from the training yard, all of them young, and the lanky one from the gate was at the front.

"Alpha," one of the guards said, from the hall. "The Council's order..."

"The Council doesn't hold my guests," Torin said, and his voice rolled through the stone. "Move."

The guard moved.

Anders cut the chain, and Torin knelt and took my wrists in his hands.

His left hand was bare.

He looked at the raw red rings and swore low in his throat, and his wolf looked out of his face.

"Come," he said. "Now."

He carried me up three flights of back stairs, though I could have walked, and I let him.

The Alpha's rooms ran along the top of the lodge, with a bedroom whose whole west wall was glass.

He shut the door and locked it, and put his back against it.

"Gunnar says exile at dawn," I said. "And that the Stone will be quiet this month."

"Not while I'm standing. I found his ledger." He pressed a hand flat to his shirt. "I remembered, Linnea. His voice in the door. 'Make it count.'"
