Chapter 16: The Council Table
The council hall held thirty pack leaders, and every one of them had heard what happened in the office.
Roan walked in at midmorning with me at his side, and the Mother behind us carrying a clay jar and a dart wrapped in cloth.
I walked on my own legs.
The room went silent when the leaders saw her, a rogue, in the king's hall, with nobody holding her.
Ansel sat in the carved chair at the head of the long table, the old king's seat, with his gloved hands folded.
He looked tired and sad.
He looked like a father.
"Son," he said. "I'm glad you've come to your senses."
"Father," Roan said. "I've brought you a jar."
He took it from the Mother and set it on the table in front of the leaders, and the Mother laid the dart beside it.
"This is the last cup my mate drank from," he said. "I found it where she left it, in rooms I sealed myself. The Mother has tested it. This dart came out of a boy at the border, and she has tested that, too."
"They carry the same tincture, cut with juniper spirit. Only the Crown armory makes it."
He did not raise his voice.
"For three years my father has poured my evening tea. Last night Ilsa smelled wolfsbane in it."
The room broke into noise.
Ansel waited, with his head slightly bowed, until it faded.
"Son, a rogue healer tells you this," he said gently. "A girl raised among the very wolves who want the Crown on its knees tells you this. And a jar sits in your hands for three years, in a room no one but you has entered."
He turned to the leaders.
"Gentlemen, ask yourselves who had the key to those rooms."
