Chapter 22: What It Cost

On the sixth morning, the wagons came down from Harrow Keep.

I stood on the castle steps in a borrowed blue dress with my hair tied back.

I watched the wagons roll through the gate one by one.

There were forty-four wolves in them.

They were thin, and pale, and blinking in the sun, and every one of them flinched at the sight of the king.

A seer stepped down first, an old woman with milky eyes, and she stopped dead on the cobbles.

"Who is that?" she whispered, looking up at the steps.

Edric took her arm to steady her and said nothing.

Roan came out of the great doors alone.

He wore no crown and no jacket, only a plain shirt with the sleeves rolled.

He walked down the steps and across the yard, past the pack leaders and the Crown Guard.

He stopped in front of the seer.

Then he went down on one knee on the cobbles.

"My father took you from your pack," he said, loud enough for the yard to hear. "I sat on the throne for three years and called it the work of rogues."

"I filled my cells with the wolves who were running from him."

"I can't give you back the years."

He took a roll of parchment from his belt.

"This is the edict that named your people rogues. I wrote the order to hunt them."

He held it to the torch that stood beside the steps.

It caught, and he held it until the flame reached his fingers, and then he let it fall.
