Chapter 14: The Graves

We rode south with twenty Stonefell wolves behind us and Maud in a cart at the rear, gripping the rail.

Elspeth stayed in the tower with the healer.

She had tried to come, and she had fallen on the stairs.

The moor was grey and wet, and the horses steamed.

Bram rode at my side and said nothing for the first hour.

I could feel him not saying it.

His shoulders were rigid with it.

"Say it," I said.

"Not now."

"You've been chewing it since the Moot. Say it before we get there."

He kept his eyes on the road.

"Seven years," he said.

"Yes."

"I went to the weir every spring and called a dead girl's name. I told myself that if you were alive, you'd be somewhere that hurt."

"A cellar. A road. A cage."

"And you were in his house." His voice shook once. "You were in his bed, Hesper. You ate at his table and you wore his colours."

I did not look away from him.

"I know what that looks like."

"I'm not asking what it looks like. I'm asking how you did it."

It was the question I had asked myself at three in the morning for seven years.

"I did it by counting," I said. "Every night, one more. I told myself, this is the plan, this is the long road in."

"Some nights I believed it."

"Some nights I hated myself so much I thought I'd already died and nobody had told me."

"I never once wanted him."

"Not once?"

"Not once, Bram. I wanted what was in his house."

"What was in his house?"

"Proof." My throat was tight. "I was looking for the one thing that would make the council listen. I never found it, because the proof was in the ground under my own feet."
