Chapter 15: The Offer
"Properly," I said.
"In the crypt under the chapel, with the Ravenhold dead. Each with a stone and a name." Torin spread his hands. "I'll stand at the head of them myself."
Twenty spades hung in the air around us.
Nobody dug.
Every man in that orchard was listening to him.
He came closer, slowly, and Bram's hand tightened on my back.
"Let him," I said.
Torin stopped an arm's length from me.
He looked tired and grave and kind, the way he looked when he sat by my bed with a cold cloth.
"I never meant it to go this way," he said. "I meant to be good to you. I was good to you, Hesper. You can't say I wasn't."
"I can say you chained me to an altar."
"Because I was frightened." His voice dropped. "She was dying, and you were the only wolf in the north I could take without a war."
"I loved Elspeth. I love her still. But I never lied to you about what you were to me."
"You called me Lena."
"I called you mine."
He said it so softly that the men nearest us looked away.
"Come home," he said. "I'll put the Aldane name on Ravenhold's gate. I'll stand before the council and say it was a mistake. I'll give you the river land, every acre."
"You'll be Luna, not my shadow, and you will run with the pack whenever you like."
He held out his hand.
It was the same hand that had warmed mine in the bedroom, on the morning of the altar.
I looked at the palm.
There was a pale line across it, an old scar.
I had kissed that scar in the dark more times than I could count.
