Chapter 4: Sanctuary

The whole of Stonefell had come out into the yard.

They stood in a ring around the gate in the grey morning light, wolves in their shirtsleeves and women with babies on their hips.

Nobody spoke.

Torin sat his black horse in the gateway with twenty riders behind him and a closed carriage at his back.

He wore the long dark coat I had brushed for him every week for seven years.

Corwin rode at his shoulder with his arm in a sling.

I walked out of the tower in Bram's shirt and a borrowed pair of boots, and the ring of wolves opened for me.

Torin saw me and relief crossed his face.

It looked real.

That was the worst part.

"Lena," he said. "Thank God. Are you hurt?"

"My name is Hesper."

"You're tired, and you've had a shock."

"You chained me to an altar."

"Because you consented to a blessing," he said. Several of the Stonefell wolves shifted at that.

"I never consented to anything. I said I spoke against it, in front of twelve elders."

"She's confused, Warden," Torin said to Bram, who had come to stand at my shoulder. "She's been under strain for weeks, and the council saw her shift in a panic."

"You'll hand her over under the council writ. Corwin, the paper."

Corwin brought a rolled sheet forward on his horse.

Bram took it from him and read it without hurry.

"It says the council's hold is lifted until the Moot," he said. "It says the Aldane woman is held at Ravenhold, not at Stonefell."
