Chapter 8: Elspeth's Visit

The new burn on my other shoulder had scabbed over in the night, and I still had no name for it.

I went to meet Elspeth at dawn on the third day, alone, as she had asked.

Bram did not like it.

He walked me to the edge of Stonefell's land and stopped under a thorn tree.

"I'll be within a shout," he said. "If she brings guards, shout."

"She won't."

"You don't know that."

"I know she held my hand and it was ice."

He looked at me for a moment, then at the sky.

The place she had named was a half-ruined waystation chapel at the border crossroads, a roofless square of stone with a rotten door.

Elspeth was kneeling on the broken floor with a shawl pulled over her head.

She had come alone on a mule.

Her lips were bluer than they had been two days before.

"You came," she said.

"You said you had something."

She nodded, and pulled a folded paper from inside her bodice.

Her hand shook so hard that she dropped it on the stones, and I picked it up.

It was a single page cut from a book with a razor, the edge still clean.

The writing was small and brown with age.

"It's from the rite book in Torin's study," she said. "I read it last night while he was asleep. He'd told me you agreed. He told me it was a kindness, because you'd been unwell."

"I was never unwell."

"I know. I've been in your bed for two months, and I know."

She pressed her hand against her mouth.
