Chapter 9: Ten Days Left
"Hugh," I said.
"He was twenty-one. He'd just been made a warrior." Craig wiped his face with his sleeve. "Dad said he dragged your father out of the car first."
I remembered the car.
I remembered my mother pushing me down onto the floor behind the seats.
I remembered her saying, "Don't look, baby. Don't look."
I never looked.
A week later, Hugh stood at Marcus's side and handed out candy at my parents' funeral.
He gave me a lollipop.
I said thank you.
"Rosalie." Kieran was at my shoulder. I hadn't heard him move. "Breathe."
I breathed.
"He's gone rogue," Craig said. "After Tristan stripped him, he left Gray Moon. Nobody knows where he is."
"Then we'll find him," Kieran said.
He looked at me.
"And when we find him, you'll be strong enough to stand in front of him."
The next day, Tristan and Genevieve left Crescent Keep before breakfast.
They didn't say goodbye.
The Homage was paid. They would be back for the Moon Court.
For twelve days after that, Kieran tried to teach me to shift.
We went out every morning to a clearing past the temple, where the frost melted off the grass by ten.
