Chapter 13: The Floor
Remy hit his father at the shoulder with the full weight of a gray wolf, and Armand Lavallee went down on his own floor.
Chairs went over.
Somewhere a child began to cry and was hushed.
Armand lay on his back between the long table and the hearth, with a wolf's forepaws planted on his chest.
Remy's jaws closed around his father's throat.
They did not bite.
They rested there, hot and wet and patient, and the whole hall watched.
Armand used the voice.
"Remy," he said. "Off."
The word rolled across the room, and sixty wolves flinched.
The gray ears did not even turn.
I felt something move in my own chest, and it took me a moment to know it was Remy.
Under his calm there was a cold clean anger, thirty years old, and it had finally been let out of its box.
Beside me Alexis stood with the paper crown still crooked on his head.
"He's not going to do it," Alexis said, low. "I can feel him deciding. He's not going to."
