Chapter 17: The Ledger

Seren's POV

Margot looked up when she heard our steps.

Her eyes were swollen and her braid had come half undone, and she held the black ledger against her chest with both arms.

"Seren," she said. "Please."

Cormick's hand tightened on mine.

"I'll be at the end of the hall," he said into my ear. "Call, and I'm there."

"I know."

He looked at Margot once, with no expression at all, and walked away.

I unlocked my door and left it open behind me.

Margot got up off the floor and came in slowly.

She did not sit. I did not ask her to.

"What is that?" I said.

"Niles's field ledger. It was in his desk in the lab." She held it out. "I broke the lock last night."

"Why?"

"Because I asked him about the scarf and he said I was being silly."

"What did you ask him?"

"Why you wore it on moon nights when I never had to." Her voice cracked. "I asked three times. The third time he told me to go to bed."

I did not take the ledger.

"Open it," Margot said. "Please. I can't read it again out loud."

I took it, and it fell open to a page ruled in Niles's neat hand.
