Chapter 18: The Motion

The Ormond elders moved against Cormick on the first morning of the autumn session.

The great room was full to the back wall.

Word had gone around the plain the night before, and half the benches held wolves who had come only to watch.

I sat on the heir's side with Pip on one hand and the seamstress on the other.

Margot sat alone near the doors with the black ledger in her lap.

Niles sat with his family, in his good coat, and did not look at any of us.

The Ormond elder rose before the thin elder with the cane had finished calling the room to order.

"Elders of Greywater," he said. "I speak for the regency."

"You have the floor," the thin elder said.

"Three years ago the heir stood in the Harvest Moon circle. He danced alone."

"We know," someone muttered.

"He danced alone the year after, and the year after that. A Rite that cannot be completed is a Rite the moon has not accepted."

He turned toward Cormick with a sorrowful face.

"The family does not say this lightly. We have loved this boy since he was a pup. But an heir who cannot hold a partner is an heir who cannot hold a pack."

The room shifted.

"We move that he be declared unfit. We move that the regency continue past his thirtieth year, until a fit heir is found. And we move that the girl's place in this year's Rite be struck, as irregular."
