Chapter 21: First Frost
The iron bed was in the foreman's cottage when I got there.
I stopped in the doorway with my overnight bag and looked at it.
It stood against the north wall, made up with the plain wool blanket and two pillows.
A rag rug lay on the floor in front of the woodstove.
"You moved the bed," I said.
"Kasper and Eero carried it out this afternoon."
"Did they say anything?"
"Eero said the frame was a good one," Ansel said. "Kasper said, mind the door."
I laughed.
I put my bag down and walked into the room.
The stove ticked and glowed.
It was the hardest frost of the year so far.
Outside the little windows the marsh lay white and still, and the sprinklers hissed and ticked all along the dike.
Everything the cold touched had stopped.
"It's ours," Ansel said, behind me. "If you want it. I mean the cottage. I mean for the winter."
"Yes."
"You haven't asked what I'm."
"Yes," I said, "to all of it."
He took my coat off my shoulders.
We went to bed early and didn't make love, because we were both too tired and too happy.
We lay in the dark with my head on his arm, and I listened to the stove burn down.
I woke at three.
The cottage was cold at the edges and warm at the center, and the window had gone silver with frost.
Ansel slept on his back beside me with one arm flung over his head, the scarred one, palm up.
His face was open and young.
I looked at him for a long time.
I had slept eight hours in a row for the first time in a month, and I felt clean and strong and ravenous.
