Chapter 12: Room Six
Room six had been empty when I left in October.
When I came on at seven on Saturday night, it held a man so old that the sheet barely lifted over him.
The charge nurse met me at the station with the chart.
"Eighty-eight, liver," she said. "He came in Wednesday from the Sisters' home on Rutger Street. He's been asking for somebody since he got here, and we can't tell who."
"Family?" I asked.
"None we've found. He says he drove for a man, thirty years."
I took the chart and went in.
He lay with his face to the window, a long bony face with big ears and white stubble.
His hand lay open on the sheet, and his eyes were the clear pale blue of a man who has been thirsty a long time.
I pulled up the chair.
"My name is Bronwen," I said. "I'm going to sit with you tonight."
He turned his head on the pillow and looked at me for a long moment.
"You're the Saint's girl," he said.
I went still.
His voice was a dry whisper.
"I heard them in the hall. The aide said the Corvino boy took a girl off the Hudak place and walked her out in the snow. She said the girl said her own name."
"That was me," I said.
"Good," he said. "Good girl."
I took a cloth and wet his lips, and he closed his eyes.
"I drove for the father," he said. "Salvatore. Thirty-one years. I drove him to church and I drove him to the club. I drove him to the hospital when the boy was born."
