Chapter 5: The Door Is Open
On the fifth morning he knocked, and I opened the door.
I opened it all the way, because I wanted to see his hands.
He stood in the hall in a dark suit with no tie and a folder under his arm.
He looked as though he had been up all night, which I knew because the shoes had been under my door at three again.
"Ten minutes," he said. "In the kitchen. Please."
I went with him.
The long table had been wiped bare, and two chairs were set at the corner, across from each other.
He sat first.
He put both hands on the table, palms down, flat against the wood, and left them there.
I sat across from him with my arms folded.
"Mr. Corvino, I'm going to say this the way I'd say it on the ward," I said. "If you have something to tell me that I won't like, tell it now. I do better with it quick."
"I know," he said. "I've been trying to think how to make it plain."
He opened the folder with two fingers.
Inside there was a single sheet.
"Your mother's debt to Hudak was four thousand two hundred," he said. "It's paid. A man took cash to his bar on Saturday and signed for it."
He turned the page toward me.
I did not look at it.
"Whether you stay or go, that does not come back to you or to her," he said. "Your landlady has been told the rent is paid through March. Your job at the hospice is held for you. I haven't told them where you've been."
"And?" I said.
"There's no 'and'."
"There's always an 'and'."
"The door is open," he said.
