Chapter 9: The Yard
Bronwen's POV
I found his yard at noon.
I had not told him I was going.
I took a taxi from the mill with the number from my coat pocket and gave the driver the name of the road.
He looked at me in the mirror and said, "The Corvino yard?" and asked nothing else.
It sat off the Thruway exit behind a high chain-link fence with a sign that said CORVINO LINEN & FREIGHT.
Forty trucks stood in rows in the snow, and men in work jackets moved between them with clipboards and coffee.
A steel office sat at the back with the lights on and a window full of faces.
I walked in through the gate in my own blue coat.
Nobody stopped me.
A man looked up from a truck door and went quiet, and then another did, and another.
Soon a line of them stood along the fence in work gloves, watching.
They knew who I was.
I was the girl from the bar.
I put my chin up and walked toward the office.
It was a long walk.
The office door was glass.
Through it I could see Valentine at a desk with a phone at his ear and a man in front of him, red in the face, shouting.
I opened the door.
Valentine did not stand.
He looked at me over the man's shoulder, and his face changed so briefly that only I would have seen it.
"Give us a moment, gentlemen," he said into the room.
His voice was low and level, and every head in the office turned.
The red-faced man did not move.
"I'm not finished," he said. "The Rochester load was short on the count, and somebody's got to answer for it."
