Chapter 11: The Birthday

Keeley's party was in the top-floor lounge of the student building, and it had balloons shaped like the number twenty.

Dani went with me and brought Micah as her plus-one, because she said every war needs a tall person.

"I'm not here to fight," I told them in the elevator.

"You're here to leave a very polite mark," Dani said.

In my bag was a brand-new notebook with a plain gray cover.

The lounge was full of people I knew from class.

Keeley stood by the window in a gold dress, laughing at something, with a drink in each hand.

When she saw me, she set both glasses down and crossed the room with her arms open.

"You came!" she said, and hugged me hard.

Her hair smelled like vanilla again.

I stood in the hug without hugging back, and over her shoulder I saw three phones come up.

"Everyone!" Keeley called, still holding my arm. "Can I have a second? I want to say something."

The music dropped.

Forty people turned.

"I want to thank Marlo for coming," she said, warm and wobbling a little. "Things got messy this week, and some things were said. I want to say, in front of everyone, that I forgive her."

A few people said "Aww."

Dani's hand closed on my wrist.

"Forgive me for what?" I asked, loud enough to carry.

"For accusing me," Keeley said gently. "It's okay. You were stressed. All I want is for us to move past it, and for you to say sorry so we can all just have cake."
