Chapter 15: Coffee Funeral

Marlo's POV

The dean held the typed receipt at arm's length and read it twice.

"Ms. Armitage," she said. "Is this your signature?"

I stood up.

Six hundred heads turned.

Dani's chair scraped as she stood beside me.

"May I see it?" I asked.

The dean passed it to a professor, who passed it down the aisle to me.

It was a clean typed page with a date in November and the words "Received, four hundred dollars, for Statistics notes, fall term."

Under that sat a signature in looping, joined-up cursive.

"No," I said.

"No, it's not yours?"

"I don't write in cursive," I said. "I never have. I print, very small, and anyone in the building can check, because I've handed in forty pages of it."

I held the receipt up so the front rows could see the loops.

"The date is a Sunday," I said. "I was on the library desk with Dani from noon to nine. The desk keeps a sign-in sheet."

"Both of us signed it," Dani said. "In ink. I printed too. We're not fancy."

Somebody in the back laughed, and this time nobody shushed him.

"A receipt is easy to type," Keeley said gently. "It doesn't mean it wasn't paid in cash."

"Fine," I said. "Then let's not talk about my handwriting. Let's talk about yours."

I walked to the front.

My legs felt thin, and I kept my eyes on the table so I wouldn't have to look at her.

"Dean, would you turn to page thirty-one in Keeley's notebook?"

The dean turned.

"On the night of October fourteenth last year, I was in the library at two in the morning," I said. "I knocked a full cup of coffee across page thirty-one of my notebook."
