Chapter 22: The Folder in the Drawer

Micah's POV

I cleaned the writing center for the second time that week, and I still wasn't ready.

I swept under the couch.

I put the dictionaries back on the shelf in alphabetical order, which they had never been in.

I took a folder out of my desk drawer, put it back, took it out again, and set it in the middle of the table where I couldn't pretend not to see it.

Marlo came in at six, still wearing her library lanyard.

She stopped inside the door.

"You look like you're about to confess to a murder," she said.

"It's smaller than that."

"Is it bigger than a sock?"

"Slightly."

She put her bag on the couch, which she knew was a trap, and sat on the arm of it instead.

"Okay," she said. "Go."

I had practiced it in the mirror.

I had written it down and crossed it out.

What came out was, "The photocopy I found last Tuesday wasn't the first one."

She waited.

"The first one was in September," I said. "On the third floor, under a table. One page, in tiny handwriting, with a star next to half the questions. I didn't know whose it was."

"Okay."

"I read it standing up in the stacks. It was on conditional probability, and it had a joke about a bridge in the margin." I wiped my hands on my jeans. "I'd read hundreds of student pages by then. I'd never read one I wanted to keep."

"You kept it?"

"I kept it. I put it in a folder, and I read it on bad days, and I looked for the handwriting everywhere. In the writing center, in the cafeteria. I even checked the sign-in sheets." I made myself look at her. "Last Tuesday I found the second one, and I told you I took it to the front desk."
