Chapter 8: Dated First
The professor's office smelled like old coffee and chalk.
He sat behind a desk covered in graded quizzes, and he didn't ask me to sit.
"Ms. Armitage," he said. "I'll be direct. A student has told me you are passing around notes that are not yours."
"Who?"
"I can't say."
"It's Keeley," I said. "She posted my notes online this morning and called them hers."
He turned his laptop around.
On the screen was a typed document titled, "Statistics Notes."
"This is the original file," he said. "It was created three weeks ago."
I read the first page.
It was my umbrella example, the star questions and the standard deviation joke, in clean, typed paragraphs.
"She typed my handwriting," I said. "From copies."
"Do you have the original handwriting?"
I put my bag on the desk and took out the notebook I carried now.
He turned the pages.
"These are this term's notes," I said. "The old ones are from last year. The umbrella example is in the old notebook. Someone took it out of my room while I was on shift."
"Someone took it."
"Yes."
"And you didn't report that."
"I didn't know who to blame until the post went up. Then everything happened today."
He took off his glasses and rubbed his nose.
"Ms. Armitage," he said, not unkindly, "I've taught this class for eleven years. I know your handwriting, and I know you're the best student I have. But a document with a date on it is a document with a date on it. Your notebook is missing, and her file is here."
