Chapter 15: The Court
The song broke off in the middle of a note.
Velun swam up through the door of the little room with his arm around my waist, and Sethra met us in the open water.
"Stay behind me," she said.
"That's Brent."
"I know the voice. I listened to it on the relay for a year."
We rose into the great vault.
It was a round hall under the station, wide as the harbor, roofed in a dome of pale coral glass.
Around its edge sat five elders on thrones of grown shell, old men and women with long white hair and scarred tails.
The crowd of the Deep pressed up against the dome's arches, silent and silver, every face turned upward.
Above us, in the black water past the glass, hung a machine.
It was a two-seat submarine, white and stubby, with a silver dolphin painted on the hull.
A bank of floodlights blazed on its nose.
Two metal arms folded out from its belly, and between them sat a launcher the size of a cannon.
Behind the acrylic dome in front sat Brent, in his aquarium fleece, with a headset on.
A man in a black sweater sat behind him at the controls.
