Gwen picked me up at eight on Monday in her mother's station wagon.
She'd made a sign out of a pizza box that said LENA CAVANAUGH WORLD TOUR.
It was taped to the passenger door.
"Take that off," I said.
"No."
Mom put my two suitcases in the back.
One was hers from her honeymoon. The other was mine from church camp.
At the end of the lane, where the reporters used to park, she held me by the shoulders.
"Call me when you get there."
"I will."
"And call me when you cross."
"Mom."
"I mean it. I want to know what it sounded like."
I hugged her too long, and she let me.
She had a smear of peach on her cheek and her work gloves in her back pocket.
Then I got in the car.
We drove down Main Street past the Blue Plate and the Juniper.
Last night the marquee had said ORCHARD ROAD. THANK YOU MILLBROOK.
Somebody had climbed up in the dark and changed the letters.
Now it said THANK YOU ROW F.
