Chapter 18: Audition

"No," I said.

It came out steady.

I was proud of that.

The whole Juniper heard it.

Somebody in the back row said, "Oh, boy."

Jasper didn't move.

"You haven't heard me read," he said.

"I don't need to. The part's cast."

"The part isn't cast," said the retired mailman, from row C. "I was terrible."

A few people laughed.

I didn't.

I kept my eyes on my clipboard.

"Thank you for coming in, Mr. Larkspur. We're not able to use you."

"Lena."

"We're done here."

Up on the stage, Brynn stood.

She had her phone in one hand and her board folder in the other.

"Actually," she said, "the director doesn't cast alone. The board approves the cast. It's in the bylaws."

"Since when?"

"Since I read them."

She came down the stage steps and stood in the aisle beside him.

"Let's be honest with everybody," Brynn said, loud enough for the back wall. "We need sixty thousand dollars in seven weeks. With him in it, we sell out every show in an hour. Without him, we're doing a play about a train for our own mothers."
