Chapter 19: Rehearsal

By Monday there were girls in Northline shirts sitting on the curb outside the Juniper.

By Tuesday the first two weekends had sold out.

Brynn had raised the tickets to seventy-five dollars without asking anybody.

Nobody complained.

Rehearsals started at six.

Jasper was there at five-thirty every night, sitting in row F with his script closed on his knee.

He was off book by Wednesday.

Nobody else was off book by Wednesday.

I gave notes from my folding table in the aisle.

I gave them to everybody by name.

To him I said "stationmaster."

"Stationmaster, you're upstage of your light."

"Stationmaster, cheat out on the second exit."

"Stationmaster, that was too slow."

He said "Okay" every time and did it.

He never argued once.

That was worse.

On Thursday the boy playing the traveler asked him for a selfie on the break.

He said yes.

Then he said, "Do me a favor and tag the ticket link."

On Friday the girls on the curb asked him to sing something.

He said, "I can't, sorry. The director said no."

They all turned and glared at the lobby doors, where I was standing.
