Chapter 16: The Bath

Yu's bath was on the thirty-eighth floor, in a white marble room with a window that took up the whole wall.

Mo Chenyao sat on the edge of it with his sleeves rolled and tested the water with his wrist.

"Too hot."

"It's the right temperature."

"For boiling noodles." Mo tipped in cold from the second tap. "Get in."

"I can wash myself."

"I know you can. You've been doing it for thirty-two years, badly. Get in."

Yu stripped in front of the window, in the steam, with the city dark behind him.

He stepped into the water and sat down.

It closed round him up to the chest, and he felt every muscle in his back come loose at once.

He had not known they were that tight.

"There," said Mo.

He went to his knees on the marble behind the tub, took the jug from the shelf, and poured warm water over Yu's hair.

A big wet palm pushed it back off his forehead.

Then soap, and long strong fingers working at his scalp, slowly, in circles, down behind the ears and the nape.

Yu shut his eyes.

Nobody had washed his hair since he was a boy.

"You're quiet," said Mo.

"Yes."

"You've been quiet for two days," said Mo. "You've stopped making fun of my shirts."

"They're very bad shirts."

"There he is." Mo rinsed him, tilting the head back with a hand.
